Vidhu Vinod Chopra was not getting distributors for Munnabhai MBBS. People thought that the film would not work. Somehow a person agreed to buy the film in Tamil Nadu. He bought the distribution rights of the film for 11 lakhs. He gave 5 lakhs in advance to Vidhu Vinod Chopra. However, when he saw the film, he retracted it. He said that this film is not worth watching. Vidhu had to return the money. However, the surprising thing was that when the film was released in Tamil Nadu, it earned Rs. 1.67 crores from there. These were quite good numbers in themselves. Let us tell you, Vidhu Vinod Chopra was the producer of the film, while Rajkumar Hirani was its director. Same thing happened with Munnabhai, which just happened with 12th fail – Vidhu Vithu Vinod Chopra talked about his 2003 release film Munnabhai MBBS at an event at Kellogg School of Management. I will never forget a man named Mohammad Bhai. He bought the distribution rights of the film for Rs 11 lakh. He gave me Rs 5 lakh in advance. Distributor Vidhu retracted after watching the film. He further said – Mohammad Bhai came to watch the film a few days before its release. After watching the film, he told my production head that he would not be able to take it because no one would be able to understand the film. I asked the production head to return the money. Till that time I had no money. There were only three days left for the film to be released. Vidhu said that after this incident he met his friend Shyam Shroff. He was a distributor, he gave Munnabhai a screen in Tamil Nadu. Vidhu said- I got a show at 11.45 in the morning. You will be surprised to know that the film did a business of Rs 1.67 crore from Tamil Nadu. Sanjay Dutt’s career got a new direction from Munnabhai MBBS. Till now no one was working with him. Vidhu expressed confidence in him. The film became a huge hit. There is discussion about this even today. Vidhu has given an update regarding Munnabhai-3. In a recent interview given to Dainik Bhaskar, Vidhu had said – Writing of Munnabhai-3 is in progress. I am guaranteeing that this film will be made 100%.
